Thanks @grapplerulrich for assigning me the theme and @babbardel for a nice theme :)

Following is the review for this theme:
REQUIRED:

  • In functions.php
    • Line 172, no need to enqueue masonry as you have already done it in line 186 as a dependent script.
    • Include all scripts and resources it uses rather than hot-linking. The exception to this is Google libraries: Check line 192.
  • Need attribution for hybrid media grabber in readme file

Recommended

  • You have mentioned that images are from https://unsplash.com with the user links which is fine, but it is recommended to add the links for images as well because you might be asked for them is future theme updates. This is so that the theme review team can check the authenticity of the image as well as it can be presented anytime when asked.

Hey Sweta and sorry for this late response,

I fixed everything you've mentioned and also give a link to the source of the images. Note that those images are only used on the Theme Screenshot, so they are not included in any other way into the theme.

Let me know if there's something else or we're ready to go :)

Hi George,

Here are some more issues you need to fix:

  • Customizer has its own built in controls for media you do not need to add extra js for this. Check functions.php function function silklite_wp_enqueue_media(). Go through this link
  • Remove Readme.md file as you have readme.txt
  • No minification of scripts or files unless provide original files. Add unminified version of masonry.pkgd.min.js, videopress.js
  • Add attribution and license of all the js(imageloaded.js, velocity.js, masonry.pkgd.min.js and so on) used by theme in readme.txt
  • Change prefix handler from silk to silklite in inc/widgets/assetsabout-me.php
  • Dont include gulpfile.js in production version

Hey again Sweta,

We just fix them too:

  1. The Upload field created by the silklite_wp_enqueue_media() function is not for the Customizer — it's an upload field for the About Me Widget instead.
  1. I removed all the unnecessary files
  2. Added unminified version of Masonry.js and removed VideoPress.js as it's not used anymore
  3. Added atrribution for all scripts
  4. Changed the prefix to silklite

Thanks,
— George

Hi George,
Just one small issue, i just found out that masonry is bundled with core. So, you will have to use that instead of adding extra js, use core masonry instead. More info in this link

Regards,
Sweta

#18 @babbardel

Hey Sweta,

The problem with the core bundled version is that it's an old one. There is already a ticket opened here https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/32802 — until then I suggest to stick with the version loaded through the theme — it's more stable and fix some bugs that we had with the cards layout.

Thanks,
— George

@grapplerulrich : Can you help me to see if masonry is allowed or not?

#20 @grapplerulrich

@babbardel - Unfortunately it is not allowed to add another version of a script that is included in core.

#21 @babbardel

@grapplerulrich But is there a solution for such cases? There is a bug in the version included in core that entirely breaks the masonry grid.

An alternative might be to change it to another script and load it from the theme - but wouldn't that be the same?

Hello!

I'll be taking a look at this accessibility-ready review today. Thanks!

#31 @davidakennedy

Hi there!

Thanks for creating a WordPress theme and submitting it to the WordPress.org directory! Since your theme also includes the accessibility-ready tag, I've also reviewed it according to those requirements, which you can find here: https://make.wordpress.org/themes/handbook/review/accessibility/

Accessibility-Ready

Headings

The heading structure needs a bit more work to pass.

  • The hidden h5 headings for the navigation elements should be h2 headings instead of h5 to maintain proper hierarchy. Also, please ensure that each page has a h1. Currently, the posts page does not have one.

ARIA Landmarks

This needs a bit more work. You can remove the role=menubar and associated roles on menu items on the primary menu. Having the menu be in a nav element and including a role=navigation is enough. Also, the menu-primary-menu in the aria-controls for the menu toggle needs to match the id for the primary. It doesn't match right now. The elements that contain role="presentation" do not need that ARIA attribute. It can be removed.

Link Text

Pass.

Controls

  • The search toggle passes because it's a <a> tag, but it would be better as a <button> because buttons fire actions and links go to resources.
  • The search toggle close button needs to be made a link or button so that it's compatible with assistive technology.

Keyboard Navigation

  • The dropdown menus need to be accessible via keyboard. Check out _s for an example of this: https://github.com/Automattic/_s
  • The forms and button elements need better visual :focus styles.
  • The search modal needs to manage focus for keyboard accessibility. This means moving focus programmatically to the modal when it opens and back to the toggle button when it closes. Also, it's not required, but would be great if you trapped focus in the modal when it's open.

Contrasts

Pass.

Skip Links

This theme needs a skip link. Please see _s for an example: https://github.com/Automattic/_s

Forms

Pass.

Images

For the featured images that are links to posts on the posts and archive pages, you can use aria-hidden="true" on the <a> element wrapped around the image. This is because there is a link to the post near that link – the <h2> element. So for a screen reader user, this is repetitive and not needed.

The SVGs used for the site title and up arrow at the bottom of the theme need extra attention to be made accessible. Please see: http://www.sitepoint.com/tips-accessible-svg/

Media

Pass.

Disallowed:
Any positive tabindex attribute. Negative or zero value tabindex is allowed in specific circumstances (assessed on a case-by-case basis):

This is okay, but there is a lot of managing tabindex within the menu JavaScript that likely isn't needed.

The inclusion of the accesskey attribute: Pass.
Spawning new windows or tabs without warning the user: Pass

Recommended:
Enlarging text: Pass.
title attributes: Pass.

Notes

These are just a collection of thoughts and micellaneous things I found while reviewing your theme.

The SVGs in the site title is rendering weirdly: https://cloudup.com/c5q6vP-qWRP

Thanks again for creating with WordPress and sharing your work! If you have any questions about your review, don't hesitate to ask!

Cheers,
Dave

As far as the accessibility, the only thing you can do is to remove an accessibility tag. And once David find the time, he can go over.

Hi @emiluzelac,

I know that, but it would be a shame since we've covered most of the accessibility review. We've really strived for that tag :)

Hey there,

You're close, with a few more more small items to address.

I reviewed the latest version of the theme against my comments above:

Headings

Pass.

ARIA Landmarks

Pass.

Controls

The search toggle close button works great now that it is a button element, but it still needs alternative text. Screen readers don't know that's a "X" there. Hide "Close" off-screen with screen reader text or use aria-labeledby like you have done with the back to top link.

Keyboard Navigation

  • Dropdown menus work well.
  • I'm still not seeing any :focus styles on comment forms.
  • You're managing focus well in the search overlay, but there are no :focus styles on the search open or close button.
  • I'm also having trouble knowing whether I'm on the mobile menu toggle because it lacks :focus styles.

Skip Links

Pass.

Images

Pass.

Notes

  • The SVGs in the site title is still rendering weirdly for me.
  • I'm getting a JS error in the console because of $('a[href=#top]').click(function(event) in main.js. It says: Uncaught Error: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: a[href=#top] and this comes up on the jquery.js file.

Hey, David.

Cristi from Pixelgrade here.

We've improved the theme considering the above recommendations.

One thing, though, about the logo.
Could you tell us in what browser are you testing? Could you also post a print-screen of the weird render of the logo?

Thank you.

#46 @davidakennedy

Hey there,

Thanks for the patience and the nudge to look at this after your updates.

Controls

Pass.

Keyboard Navigation

This is looking better, but I'm still seeing issues. The form elements look good. The search toggle looks good on larger screens. It's the smaller screens where I have issues. The menu button has focus styles, but they are based on color alone. The open search toggle on small screens has no :focus styles. The close search button is great. Also, I don't see any focus styles on submit buttons, like in the comment form. Check out the guidelines for this:

Make sure you can see visually which link is focused. Focus should either incorporate a visual change that is not based on color (background change, underline, shape) or a color change where the difference between the two colors meets color contrast guidelines.

ARIA

Note: You can remove the role=menuitem from menu items. You don't need them, just like you didn't need role=menubar . They're related, and should have both been removed.

Looks like the JS error is fixed. The SVG title screenshot is posted earlier in the thread. See: https://cloudup.com/c5q6vP-qWRP Looks the same for me in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. But maybe it's just me if no one else is seeing it. I turned off all my extensions and it still renders that way.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Hey, David.

This would be our focus styles for the buttons on mobile devices:

As for the site title, we have an option that's called Site Title Outline. It can be found in Customizer -> Theme.
https://cloudup.com/cBSI0BdFRuM

If a title is very long, a smaller font-size will be set in order to make it fit the header space, in consequence the closer to 0 the Site Title Outline value must be set so that the title can be read.

#49 @davidakennedy

Hey Cristian,

Thanks for the changes, and for explaining the site title issue. I hadn't realized that. It's a bit of a weird consequence to a long title. :)

Everything looks good. The only thing I don't see fixed referenced in my last comment:

Also, I don't see any focus styles on submit buttons, like in the comment form.

Regular submit buttons, etc. don't have any :focus styles, making it hard to know if you're focused there. Make sure you incorporate a style that doesn't rely on color alone. So an outline, border, etc.

Thanks!
